About
This site came about as a result of my friend Paul Carter, his video collection and his wifes desire to “get them out of the sitting room”! Paul has been recording Grand Prix’s since the early 80’s and now has a huge collection of VHS tapes with virtually all the races on.
As it’s been a while since some of these tapes have seen the light of day we thought we share them so we can all “look through those rose tinted glasses”.
How do we convert from VHS tape to digital media?
Carefully! The tapes from the 80’s are quite brittle now and quite often I only get one chance to record them before they snap. Any how for those that are interested this is how it’s done:
- Record from VHS video recorder to Panasonic DVD recorder using SCART lead and DVD-R discs in long play mode (so I can fit a 4 hour tape onto the DVD)
- Using a fantastic piece of software called Cinematise on a MacBook I then extract segments of the DVD to MPEG-4
- Finally, I upload each Grand Prix to Google Video and then link to this WordPress blog.

All those late nights recording the Grand Prix Highlights were worth it after all. At the time I thought the only person ever likely to enjoy them might be my son but to be able to share them with fellow afficionados is a real bonus. Thanks Stuart, keep up the great work.
I’ve got some from the late 70s too – somewhere …
Funny- i used to tape all the races on Beta back in the mid 80’s (my stepdad was convinced it would rule out VHS) but sadly over time I’ve tossed them all away.
I would love to see those races in complete form, adverts and all, if that’s possible.
Thanks for putting those videos up for all to see

Really great videos from a great time of F1 Grand Prix World Championchips!
Btw. the file of the 1985 South African Grand Prix is somehow cripped, just 4 Minutes or so, after that the video stops…
Are there more to come?
Any chance to get higher res versions of the races?
Also would you have Monaco 1990?
thanks again!
Excellent work, and a fantastic collection. Please continue transferring races. I’m thoroughly enjoying watching the 1985 season (I was only one year old at the time).
If at all possible is there any way to increase the volume of the recorder such as feed the audio jacks through an amp? The sound is audible but a bit quiet when I listen on my PSP even on full volume.
I really appreciate your efforts to bring these classic races to us!
This is much appreciated. Thanks for going to all the trouble. I was finally able to show my mate what a JPS Lotus looked like when it was doing it’s stuff.
Magic.
Keep it up.
You guys rock! Just when I was getting frustrated about the lack of good online video for F1, I found this site. I am blown away by the effort you are putting in. I’ll be spreading the word and linking to your site from mine, thanks!
I am looking for a dvd for the 1998 Spa Grand Prix, Belguim. I can’t find it anywhere. Can you help?
Kind regards
